Taught by working artists, in the same building where their finished work hangs on the wall.

Very few art centers can say this: the person teaching your class most likely has a studio down the hall and work hanging in the gallery out front. Our instructors are practicing artists first and teachers second, which means students learn the way the craft is actually done — brush in hand, mistakes and all. Classes stay small on purpose. Whether you are three years old and holding a paintbrush for the first time, or sixty and finally taking the oil painting class you have been putting off for thirty years, there is a seat here for you.

Jaime’s Palette — Children’s Art Classes

Wednesdays & Thursdays · 5:00 – 6:00 PM · Ages 3–13

A new painting every week, start to finish, in a single hour. Jaime Hinrichs walks each child through the project step by step on an 8 × 10 canvas — and every young artist goes home the same evening with a finished piece in hand. Along the way she works in the fundamentals: brush control, color mixing, composition, and a little art history sized to the age of the room.

Classes are deliberately kept small so every child gets real attention. The Wednesday session is built for ages 3–6; Thursday runs the same project for ages 7–13 at a more advanced level, so siblings can paint the same subject in the week that suits them.

All classes run 5:00 – 6:00 PM. The Center is closed for classes on August 12th and 13th.

Or purchase four classes in advance and the fifth is free. All supplies — canvas, paint, brushes, aprons — are included in the price. Nothing to bring but your child.

Oil & Acrylic Painting with Chuck Anderson

Charles “Chuck” Anderson teaches the fundamentals and techniques of oil and acrylic painting to adult students at the Center. His classes start where you are. If you have never stretched a canvas, you will learn how. If you have been painting for years and cannot work out why your shadows go muddy, that is exactly the kind of problem the class is built to solve.

The work moves through the things that actually make a painting hold together — drawing and proportion, value structure, color mixing from a limited palette, edge control, and the mechanics of each medium. Students work at their own easel, on their own subject, with Chuck moving through the room. Nobody is asked to paint the same apple as the person beside them.

Everything We Teach

Sessions run on a rolling basis and new offerings open as instructors add them. If you do not see what you are looking for, ask — there is a good chance someone in the building teaches it.

Ages 3–13

Children’s Art Classes

A finished painting every week on an 8 × 10 canvas, plus fine motor skills, technique and a little art history. Wednesdays for the little ones, Thursdays for the older group.

Child & Grown-Up Together

Mommy & Me Painting

Bring a son, daughter, grandchild, niece or nephew and paint side by side. You each go home with your own canvas — a matched pair that hangs on the wall and keeps the evening alive.

Oil & Acrylic Fundamentals

Drawing, value, color mixing and edge control — the structural work that makes a painting hold together. Taught by Chuck Anderson at your own easel, on your own subject.

Adults · Beginner Welcome

Watercolor & Abstract Acrylic

Composition, perspective and professional watercolor technique with Ruth Stubenrouch, who also opens the door to large-format abstract acrylic for students ready to loosen up.

Teens & Adults

Jewelry Design & Polymer Clay

Something different from the easel. Linda Koffel works in polymer clay and jewelry design, and students leave with a wearable piece rather than something to hang.

Adults · Intermediate

Classical Oil Painting

Robin Williamson, founder of The DaVinci Studios, teaches the refined realist tradition in oils — careful drawing, layered glazing, and the patience the medium asks for.

Ages 13–18

Teen Portfolio Studio

For high school students building a body of work for college applications or scholarship review. Individual critique, sustained projects, and honest feedback from working artists.

Adults · Drop In

Open Studio Sessions

No instruction, no assignment — just good north light, an easel, and other people working quietly nearby. Bring your own materials and whatever you are in the middle of.

Groups · Up to 30

Parties & Field Trips

Birthday parties and school field trips, hosted here or brought to your classroom. Every child finishes a project the same day, and the theme can be matched to your curriculum.

Before You Enroll

How It Works

Reserve your seat ahead of time — class sizes are capped so every student gets attention
Children’s classes are $25 per child per class, or four paid in advance and the fifth free
Supplies are included in children’s classes; adult students generally bring their own materials
Missed a week? Let us know and we will do our best to move you to another session
Prices and schedules for adult and specialty classes vary by instructor — just ask

Good to Know

No experience is expected in any beginner class, at any age
Wear something you would not mind getting paint on — acrylic does not come out
Parents are welcome to wait in the gallery, which is free to browse
Children’s classes are one hour, so a finished painting comes home the same evening
